World Diabetes Day 2015 events
As we have been doing for the past 15 years, preparations for the event began in the last week of September, with Speech, Essay, Drawing and Healthy Cooking competitions conducted for students and the public. A student rally around the town of Chengalpattu on November 3, 2015 was flagged off by Mr.Saravanan of the Department of Police. Students from local schools and colleges, staff and students of the hospital, associations such as the Rotary, Lions, Lioness and Walkers Clubs participated. Participants educated the onlookers with flyers and information on adopting a healthy lifestyle for a disease-free future. Go Blue for Breakfast: To reiterate the importance of having a healthy breakfast everyday, particularly in stalling the onset or progression of Diabetes, the International Diabetes Federation is orchestrating Go Blue for Breakfast events the world over, on World Diabetes Day. Sree Renga Healthy Living Centre, the new-age boutique that empowers individuals with knowledge of diseases and ways to prevent them proactively and holistically, hosted a breakfast meeting on World Diabetes Day 2015. Braving the monsoon rains, a small group of health-seeking people shared their life experiences over Wheat idlis with carrots, Millet upma, steamed lentils with sambhar and chutney. The event was held in association with the Rotary Club of Mahindra Industrial City, Maraimalai Nagar. The Annual Souvenir on Diabetes was released amongst eminent individuals of our geography: Dr.M.Balasubramaniam, Past State President, Indian Medical Association, Tamilnadu State Branch; Dr.R.N.Manikandan (President) and Dr.K.R.admanabhan (Secretary) of the Chengalpattu branch of IMA; Mrs.Revathi Gopi, Ward Councilor and Mr.Velu of the Chengalpattu Welfare Association. Even as the monsoon rains showered its blessings a bit more generously than we would have liked it to – an unprecedented 34 cms of rainfall on World Diabetes Day 2015 -- a good number of patients braved the floods to avail of the FREE tests (Blood sugar, Blood pressure, BMI, Vision, Dental and Feet) over the two days. Many diabetic patients also availed of the additional discounted tests (Micral, HbA1C, Bone Mineral Density, Biothesiometry and Fundus photography) to monitor the complications of the disease. In association with Penn Nalam Hospital, Chennai, Breast and Cervical cancer screening tests (Mammography and Pap smear) were also conducted. Devaamirtham, Chennai conducted an educational expo on traditional health foods such as low-glycemic varieties of rice and cereals.
